Alternative Crops and Organics Field Day

August 8, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join Dr. Jeanine Davis and crew on August 8th at 9am for our annual Alternative Crops and Organics field day where we highlight the agricultural research we are conducting at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, NC. This year in the certified organic unit we will show you the multi-state organic tomato breeding project (TOMI) whose aim is to produce heirloom-type tomatoes with increased resistance to foliar pathogens, the organic tomato fungicide trial (also part of TOMI), the organic tomato late blight screening study for Vitalis Organic Seeds, the organic tomato variety trial for High Mowing Organic Seeds, and some of Randy Gardner‘s new lines. We will also visit the Eastern Broccoli project study, the hops breeding study, the industrial hemp study, and the truffle study. You will hear from the researchers about current projects and see the results of the studies designed to help farmers and gardeners in our region. The field tour part will take place from 9 to noon. Then, you are welcome to bring your own lunch and join us for a discussion about growing industrial hemp. Bring a water bottle or snacks for the morning, and feel free to bring your cameras, questions and curiosity! If you’d like to stay for the hemp discussion, bring a brown bag lunch; we will provide iced tea and water.
This program is brought to you by the NC Alternative Crops and Organics Program and the Mountain Research Station. You can learn more about our program on our website at
and on our blog at
The highlighted projects are funded by grants from the USDA/NIFA Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative, USDA/NIFA Specialty Crops Research Initiative, USDA Specialty Crops Block Grant Program administered through the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the NC Agricultural Foundation.
This event will take place at the Mountain Research Station, 265 Test Farm Rd, Waynesville, NC 28786.
