Forest Pest Training Course

May 19, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Forest Pest Outreach program is offering a course that trains participants to identify major forest pest insects that pose serious threats to our NC forests, with a focus on the emerald ash borer and walnut twig beetle/thousand cankers disease. Participants will learn how to identify pests and survey for their presence in the field.

The training will focus on teaching participants to recognize signs of the presence of emerald ash borer and walnut twig beetle, as well as their host trees, how to survey for them, how to control them (where possible), and how to report suspicious infestations. Other invasive species will be discussed as well, such as redbay ambrosia beetle and European gypsy moth. Early detection is critical to slowing down the spread of these insects that will destroy our parks, backyards, and woodland trees.

The class will take place at the Buncombe County Extension Office on Friday, May 19 from 1-4pm. It will contain indoors and outdoors components; the first half of the class will focus on identification of pest insects and the second half will be outdoors learning to identify trees. We will also have information available for educators and for outdoor professionals with ideas that are beneficial in the classroom as well as to those who spend a lot of time outdoors.
