As part of the Get Local campaign, ASAP is teaming up with Alan Muskat on a quest for mushrooms, the featured Get Local product for the month of June. In this special workshop at Highland Lake Cove, you’ll learn how to safely find, identify, appreciate, and maybe even eat morels, chanterelles, chicken of the woods, and other extreme cuisine. Discover milkweed asparagus, stinging nettle fritters, fungal faux squid ink, “anty pasta,” even mushroom “mocha” ice cream… it all depends on what you find! You’ll meet thirty or more wild foods and experience the life of a modern hunter-gatherer firsthand. You’ll also learn about wild medicines, dyeing with mushrooms, and more, all with Alan’s unique blend of poetry, stories, wit and wisdom.

The day will include a short, easy walk; all ages welcome. Alan’s introductory e-book is included, so there’s no need to take notes. That evening, experience find dining at Asheville’s Zambra Tapas Restaurant: order from the menu and your catch of the day will be incorporated at no extra charge.

Alan Muskat really knows how to pick ’em. Since 1995, he’s sold hundreds of pounds of wild mushrooms a year to restaurants and hotels including The Biltmore Estate and The Grove Park Inn. Author of Wild Mushrooms: A Taste of Enchantment, this stand-up mycomedian has popped up in The New Yorker and in Country Living, on PBS, The History Channel, and on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. He’s even preached on Voice of America, ardently urging the masses to sample rather than trample the toadstools. Ask anyone who knows Alan: when it comes to bringing out the fun in fungi, he’s the champignon.

This event is presented in conjunction with ASAP’s Get Local campaign. Get Local highlights a local ingredient each month that reflects our region’s changing, seasonal harvest. Each month, ASAP will feature a special event to celebrate the local ingredient of the month. ASAP is excited to be working with Alan to celebrate mushrooms in June!
