Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

The Transylvania Farmers Market is unique for tailgate markets in the region — it stays open, all year long, outside in the same location.

This means that vendors are out in the elements, whatever they may be each Saturday. With that said, weather may determine if all of these vendors are able to make it to the market each week. Who and what might you find at the Transylvania Farmers Market?

Pitch Pine Organic Farm has a range of seasonal winter vegetables including roots and greens. Cherryfield Farm has beef and lamb, Calee’s Coops have chicken eggs and pork, Cosmo Farms has duck eggs, and Mountain Valley Meat has sorghum molasses among other products.

What about downtown Asheville this past week? If you have a sweet tooth, Asheville City Market this past week was the place to be. Rebel Oven has pumpkin cakes and chocolate muffins, as well as other gluten-free, grain-free, paleo treats. Sweetheart Bakery had an array of delicious baked goods, both made with wheat flours, as well as a few gluten-free goods.

Asheville City Market, Saturdays 9 am-noon, in the Masonic Temple downtown.

YMCA Winter Market, Saturdays 9 am–noon, in the parking lot of the Woodfin YMCA.

The YMCA is also hosting a South market, held Wednesdays 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM in the YMCA in the lobby of the Reuter Family YMCA in Biltmore Park.

This week, consider exploring a market outside of Asheville. Here are just a few nearby to choose from:

Transylvania Farmers Market, Saturdays, 10 am–noon, outside at 190 E. Main Street, Brevard

Boone Winter Farmers’ Market, every 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9 am–noon, at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center located just off King St. at 252 Poplar Grove Rd. in downtown Boone.

Franklin Farmers “Winter” Tailgate Market, Saturdays,10 am-noon, on the 200 Blk of E. Palmer St. in Franklin, NC

Winter farmers markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
