Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

Markets across the regions happen throughout the winter.

In Black Mountain, the Black Mountain Tailgate Market is a three-season market that has been running for more than 20 years. Last year, the demand for a winter market led to the Black Mountain Winter Market, hosted by Roots & Fruits Market, inside of their heated pavilion in downtown Black Mountain.

Who and what can you find at the Black Mountain Winter Market? Olivette Farm has organically grown market garden go-tos microgreens, spring mixes, and braising mixes. Betsy’s Farm has salad greens grown with organic practices. Her Heartbeat Farm has heirloom produce, berry plants, and eggs. Roger Queen Seafood is bringing fresh Atlantic seafood. Little Round Farmhouse Bakery provides baked goods and breads made using local and organic produce. Fermenti supplies fermented foods such as krauts kimchis and pickles. And Black Mountain Bone Broth Bar has local, organic bone broths, including vegan options.

This past week, Asheville City Market was full of exciting produce, including broccoli rabe, green onions, and leeks from Ten Mile Farm, garlic From New Moon Herbs Farm, spring onions from Wildwood Herbal, and a mild sorrel from Jake’s Farm.

Asheville City Market, Saturdays 9 am-noon, in the Masonic Temple downtown.

YMCA Winter Market, Saturdays 9 am–noon, in the parking lot of the Woodfin YMCA.

The YMCA is also hosting a South market, held Wednesdays 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM in the YMCA in the lobby of the Reuter Family YMCA in Biltmore Park.

This week, consider exploring a market outside of Asheville. Here are just a few nearby to choose from:

Black Mountain Winter Market, Saturdays 11 am–2 pm, inside of the heated pavilion at the intersection of Ridgeway and Sutton in downtown Black Mountain.

Boone Winter Farmers’ Market, every 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9 am–noon, at the Watauga Agricultural Conference Center located just off King St. at 252 Poplar Grove Rd. in downtown Boone.

Franklin Farmers “Winter” Tailgate Market, Saturdays,10 am-noon, on the 200 Blk of E. Palmer St. in Franklin, NC.

Winter farmers markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about farms, tailgate markets, and farm stands, including locations and hours, by visiting ASAP’s online Local Food Guide.
