Outdoor markets will be opening in a few weeks, but there’s still plenty to find at winter farmers tailgate markets!
Asheville City Market has plenty of local farm products including eggs and meat products from Dry Ridge Farm, apples courtesy of Creasman Farms, and the always-popular kale and red mustard greens from Jakes’s Farm. Sweet Monkey Bakery continues to offer up their fun bread varieties such as dill pickle bread, cinnamon bread, and jalapeno bread.
Over at the Woodfin YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market, McConnell Farms has that wonderful reminder of spring with his strawberry plants as well as selling ginger, apples, apple cider, and apple butter. Stop by John’s Berry Patch table while you’re at the market. John himself is manning the table, which is filled with microgreens, potted herbs, eggs, and black walnuts, which he shells himself. While at the Woodfin market, go ahead and introduce yourself to Victor, the owner of Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery. Victor specializes in raw, cave-aged cows milk cheeses from locally-produced milk. The creamery carries a number of cheeses including a chipotle jack. To make a good salad to go with those cheeses, buy lettuce, kale, turnips, and collards from New Moon Herbs Farm.
Don’t forget that the Jackson County Farmers Market is hosting their brunch fundraiser this Saturday, March 22 during normal market hours, 10 am to 1 pm. Brunch will include sausage and egg biscuits with ingredients courtesy of Jackson County Farmers Market vendors.
Spring is almost here, and we’ll start seeing outdoor tailgate markets opening in April. A few markets report that farmers will be out on Saturday mornings before the official opening of those markets. These include Leicester Farmers Market (opening: March 29) and Haywood’s Historic Farmers Market (opening: April 26). Henderson County Tailgate Market has already started their outdoor market. Visit that market every Saturday morning, 7:00 am to noon at 100 N. King Street in Hendersonville.
