Tinctures, Teas, and Oils for Your Home Medicine Cabinet

September 6, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Part of the Organic Growers School 2019 Harvest Conference.

Led by Noelle Fuller.

Homemade herbal remedies are accessible, safe, and easy. All cultures on earth use the plants around them for their medicinal properties. Whether you grow herbs, wild harvest them, or purchase them, there are many forms with which to use and preserve them. This is a crash course for new growers and processors interested in understanding how to use herbs in their everyday self care. Explore processing herbs into:

  • Teas: Made from an herbal infusion (adding hot/warm water) or a decoction (simmering in water) using all parts of the plant.
  • Tinctures: Herbal extracts produced by soaking herbs in alcohol, thus enhancing and preserving the medicinal properties.
  • Oils & Salves: Fresh or dried herbs are soaked in oil, infusing their properties, sometimes using heat to aid the process. From there the oils can be made into salves.

Learn about the qualities and benefits of the herbs, methods for preparing, the benefits of using fresh vs. dried herbs, assessing herbal quality when purchasing, supplies and tools, labeling tips, and how and when to use the preparations.

Appropriate for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of both growing and processing medicinal herbs for everyday use.
