Marvelous Mushroom Families of the Southeast

September 7, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 4:30 pm

Part of the Organic Growers School 2019 Harvest Conference.

Led by Luke Cannon

A deep and daring dive into the fascinating fungi families of the South East! Identify with confidence and safety by learning the major mushroom family or family-groups. We will intimately examine a dozen of the most common fungal families of our region, learning the key field characters that distinguish each group without a microscope. We will also discuss other features of field identification, including:

  • Spore printing
  • Habitat and substrate determination
  • Harvesting ethics and practices
  • Preparation and preservation techniques

Weather permitting, about half of our day will be in a covered outdoor pavilion classroom and half will be out in the woods and fields meeting and exploring mushrooms and other fungi in their wilds habitats. In-the-field instruction will include some light trail walking for one to two miles.

Appropriate for beginner and intermediate mushroom enthusiasts, aspiring naturalists, ecologists, herbalists or anyone who has interest in bringing more fresh and local wild foods into their homes and diets while helping to positively steward our native ecosystems.
