Sierra Club: The Connection Between Pandemics and Environmental Change

June 3 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

On Thursday, June 3, the Sierra Club presents Rachel Muir, biologist and Scientist Emeritus with the U. S. Geological Survey, who will talk about pandemics and human intervention in the environment.

The event will be held over Zoom from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

Muir explains that Emerging Infectious Diseases, (EIDs), are having significant impacts on human populations and economies. These EIDs have common features; first, they are zoonotic, (shared with other species), or involve an animal vector such as mosquitos or ticks. Second, the rapid increase in the number and impact of these diseases is related to human-induced changes in landscapes and climate.

“Emerging diseases” already exist in nature; it is human activities and behavior that has brought us in contact with them. Many more diseases could emerge if steps are not taken to ameliorate human impacts on the environment, she said.
