Meet the Newcomers: David Kendall of Troutlily Farm and Kanati Lodge

By Alex Alesi, fall communications intern

During ASAP’s Farm Tour this weekend, you’ll have the chance to learn from and explore more than 30 family-owned farms spread throughout Western North Carolina. Many of these farms are longstanding tour participants and will be familiar to those of you who attended last year and in other years past. More than a dozen, however, will make their Farm Tour debuts in 2012.

This week, meet Farm Tour newcomer David Kendall of Troutlily Farm and Kanati Lodge!

Q: You’re new to the Farm Tour. Are you also new to farming?
A:
No, not really. I grew up on a farm in Tennessee. I got away from it for a long time; I’m 62. We bought this farm in 2000, so we’ve been working with it since then.

Q: What will visitors see and experience at your farm during the Farm Tour?
A:
They can expect to see a wide variety of sustainable farming techniques. We do organic and some biodynamic practices, and we’re trying to convert to permaculture. We’re an official host farm for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), and in the last year we’ve had 40 WWOOFers.

Q: What’s your favorite fall crop to grow, or your favorite thing about fall on your farm?
A:
We have a lot of old heirloom apples. It’s a subsistence kind of farm; there are a lot of varieties of heirloom apples. We planted about 50 varieties ourselves, and we’ve lost about 10 to voles and other things. There are a lot of older ones here we’re trying to take care of.

We also have Christmas trees, blueberries, mushroom logs, and asparagus, but the apples are the big thing. We had two late frosts in the spring so our apple production is not even 10 percent this year.
