Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

This is the time of year, when each and every week at area farmers tailgate markets brings a whole new landscape of fruits and vegetables. So many “firsts” of the season are cropping up, that it can be hard to keep track of it all!

Many fruits are making their first appearances of the year now! Meadow Cove Farm has black raspberries (West Asheville Tailgate Market), Flying Cloud Farm (North Asheville Tailgate Market, Asheville City Market, and River Arts District Farmers Market) and Thatchmore Farm have blueberries (North Asheville Tailgate Market and West Asheville Tailgate Market), and Full Sun Farm has sour cherries (North Asheville Tailgate Market and River Arts District Farmers Market). Also, mulberries from Tucker’s Garden (French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market, North Asheville Tailgate Market, and West Asheville Tailgate Market)!

Second Spring Market Garden is bringing the nightshades to the light of Saturday mornings at Asheville City Market. Be sure to get to the market early for the first eggplants and sweet peppers of the season.

Prepare your pickle jars: green beans have arrived from Ten Mile Farm (River Arts District Farmers Market and Asheville City Market). And, make all your dishes “pop” with fresh herbs such as basil, oregano, dill, and sage from Blue Meadow Farms (West Asheville Tailgate Market and Asheville City Market).

On June 25-26, market shoppers will have the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes peek on farms that they shop from at market on ASAP’s Farm Tour. Ask your farmer if they’re on the tour, or see the list of participating farms and which tailgate markets where you can find them. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit family farms in WNC, as they open their barn doors to the public and offer guided tours, hands-on demonstrations, and family-friendly experiences for visitors of all ages.

Area farmers tailgate markets take place throughout the region. As always, you can find information about when tailgate markets, farm stands, and other farms to visit, are open by visiting our online Local Food Guide.
