Fresh at Farmers Markets This Week

Strawberries are one of the most anticipated of early spring offerings at farmers tailgate markets. And, we’re delighted to report that they are here!

You can find fresh strawberries at Asheville City Market courtesy of Jake’s Farm! Jake’s is currently growing their strawberries in a greenhouse, but soon they will transition outside. This means you can expect fresh strawberries for weeks to come. Make sure that you get to the market early before they sell out for the day. Jake’s Farm is also offering a variety of kales, chards, spring onions, salad mix, and more.

Market opening alert! Opening this Wednesday, April 21, 2-6 pm in the lower parking lot of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, the Montford Farmers Market will feature vendors offering fresh produce, herbs, cut flowers, breads, cheeses, meats, eggs, pottery, personal care products, and more! Montford welcomes four new vendors: Wright Farm Beef with all cuts of grassfed and brewers grain-fed beef, A Way of Life Farm with locally raised pork products, No Evil Foods offering all natural seitan, and Cane Creek Creations offering fine pottery and jewelry. St. Christopher Abbey Farms will also be featuring a variety of gourmet mushrooms.

At their second outdoor market of the year, the Weaverville Farmers Market had a huge variety of produce, meats, eggs, cheeses, grains, and breads. Three Graces Dairy offered a wide variety of goat cheeses, including their products Scottish Spiced Ginger, Rose, and that seasonal delight, Ramps! Mackey Farms sold sausage, fresh bacon, chorizo, and bratwurst. You could find Red Stem spinach, Mesculin mix, and eggs from Highgate Farm, and next week they will have lettuce mix, pea tops, lettuce heads, radishes, and turnips. Fork Mountain Farm was selling radishes, turnips, spinach, arugula, lettuce mix, and a variety of pickles.

The French Broad Food Co-op Wednesday Tailgate Market is in bloom with all kinds of produce, honey, meats, eggs, cheeses, and starts! MiLo Acres is offering up kale, carrots, cilantro, ramps, chives, and chicken and quail eggs. Starts are plentiful at Leaning Willow Farm, where you can find broccoli, collards, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, kale, lettuce, and culinary herb starts. Be sure to look for Locust and Sourwood honey from Dave’s Raw Honey, as well as a variety of goat cheeses from OakMoon Farm & Creamery.
