Fresh at Farmers Markets

The warm weather has come along fast, and that means area farmers tailgate markets are offering even more produce options!

A popular farm at tailgate markets is McConnell Farms. Danny McConnell reports that they will have asparagus, rhubarb, apple cider, ginger apple, and strawberry cider at the Asheville City Market and the North Asheville Tailgate Market this weekend. Be sure to get there early for the rhubarb and asparagus! McConnell Farms will also be at the West Asheville Tailgate Market and Asheville City Market South over the next few weeks.

The Black Mountain Tailgate Market is opening for the season this Saturday 9 am to noon! This week, find eggs from Highlander Farm, pork and beef from Foothills Farm and Butchery, and baked goods from Farm & Sparrow and Sweet Monkey Bakery. You will also be able to find produce from Highgate Farm, Blue Meadow Farms, Adelbert Farm, and Cove Creek Nursery Farm. Bring the kids for art and crafts!

Also opening this Saturday is the Mills River Farmers Market! From 8 am to noon, shop for a variety of local fresh produce, goat cheese, cooking oils, jewelry, plant starts, jellies and jams, soaps, baked goods, fresh roasted coffee and coffee beans, and handmade clothing. Holly Spring Farm and Nursery will have greens, Brittain Farms will have duck and chicken eggs, and there will be beef from Wright Farm Beef. The Mills River Farmers Market is now accepting SNAP/EBT! All season, the Mills River market will host a monthly education and cooking demo with volunteers teaching the public how to cook with local food, giving out samples, and handing out recipe cards. Be sure to stop by in mid-May for the first class!

The Southern Tailgate Market is a brand new market in Black Mountain across from the Ingles warehouse. On Thursdays, 2-6 pm, and Saturdays, 8:30 am-1 pm, you can find produce from Whispershollar Farms, meat from Vandele Farms on Cedar Creek, fresh seafood from Black Mountain Seafood, and goat’s milk and cheeses from Round Mountain Creamery. You can also find plants, jewelry, baked goods, artwork, and more. This market is growing fast, so bring the kids to see the animals, get their faces painted, and to try some free samples!

It’s always exciting to find local produce at markets, but what about bakeries that use local produce in their baked goods? For example, Sweetheart Bakery is using McConnell Farms asparagus to make their asparagus tarts! The kale for their kale tarts come from Jake’s Farm and the rhubarb for their strawberry rhubarb sweet are also from McConnell Farms. You can find Sweetheart Bakery throughout the growing season at the Asheville City Market, the North Asheville Tailgate Market, and the Montford Farmers Market.
