Fresh at (Winter) Farmers Markets This Week

Last Saturday, Haywood Park Hotel’s atrium began its winter transformation into a local food paradise with the first indoor Asheville City Market. The aroma of Biltmore Coffee Traders’ Sumatran blend filled the corridor, while farmers and artisan food producers dotted the space with all kinds of goodies—we’re talking chicken, chocolate, eggs, lamb, pickles, pork, you name it. Talented area craftspeople were there, too, with bath products for the winter blues, handmade lunch sacks and more.

Produce vendors like Kay Farm and Blue Meadow Farms sold out of veggies early. So, if greens, radishes and cabbage are on your weekend menu, get there when the market opens this Saturday: 10 am. If you don’t make it early though, be sure to still stop by these vendors’ booths, because…

…now’s a great time to sign up for a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, farm share. At Asheville City Market, Blue Meadow Farms offered up brochures and talked about their CSA, while Wildwood Herbal (Flying Fish Farm CSA) and Ivy Creek Family Farm had CSA brochures and took questions at the Neighborhood Y at Woodfin Winter Tailgate Market. The Woodfin market also opens at 10 am this Saturday for you veggie-hunters. While you’re there, ask Flying Cloud Farm about their bulk boxed sweet potatoes so you can stock up for the season.

If you missed all the veggies at Asheville City Market South Wednesday, don’t worry; they’ll be back again next week. Gladheart Farm brought carrots, cabbage, greens, sweet taters and winter squash, and that’s just one vendor!

What about the sweet stuff? If you’re gluten free, Sweetheart Bakery, a vendor at the Woodfin Y market, now offers gluten-free baked goods alongside their well-loved sweet, and savory, treats.

See y’all shopping!
