Fresh at (Winter) Farmers Markets This Week

More veggies and vendors are keeping new winter markets feeling new! Last week, the Neighborhood Y at Woodfin Winter Tailgate Market welcomed Jake’s Farm, as well as eco-friendly cleaning product vendor Shecology (try their laundry soap nuts!). Jake’s Farm will bring their wide variety of produce to Asheville City Market (ACM) downtown beginning this Saturday as well. Speaking of veggies, expect lots of lettuce. At ACM last weekend, Kay Farm’s coolers overflowed with the leafy stuff.

Smoke Signals Baking will also join Asheville City Market downtown Saturday, January 26. Owner Tara Jensen bakes an assortment of breads, along with some sweet treats, featuring Carolina Ground flour. She’ll sell 100% Carolina Ground wheat, rye and pastry flours, too. The flour is made from Carolina-grown grains and milled using a cold-mill process that produces intact flours said to be nutrient-rich and flavor-forward.

There’s even a new cheese on the block: Fromage Fort from Three Graces Dairy. The cheesemakers describe it as a spreadable piquant blend of several of their hard cheeses with spices and wine. Yum! Find Three Graces at the Woodfin market and this week at Asheville City Market downtown—they alternate every other week with Spinning Spider Creamery, who’ll be back at ACM on Saturday, February 2.

Also on February 2, the Jackson County Farmers Market will host a winter garden workshop at 2 pm at the Sylva Community Garden. The cost is $5 (kids free), and all proceeds benefit the market. Pick up your ticket at the tailgate this Saturday at the Community Table in Sylva from 10 am to 1 pm, or just get to the workshop early.

PS: Did you see Asheville City Market South on the front page of Asheville Citizen-Times? Pictured is Gladheart Farm; they’re sure to have lots of veggies next Wednesday (11 am-3 pm at Biltmore Park Town Square).

PPS: Of course, don’t just check out the vendors mentioned in this report. When at ACM downtown, be sure to walk around the back of the atrium, as vendors are set up in every corner!
