Fresh at [Winter] Farmers Markets This week

With all the cold weather we’ve had lately, there are many folks sure to have pots of chili on their stovetops. The best kind by far is chili with locally sourced ingredients, and area winter farmers tailgate markets have everything you need.

Shady Place Farm at Asheville City Market has ground beef, Dry Ridge Farm at Asheville City Market and the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market has ground pork, and East Fork Farm at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market has ground lamb.

Vegetarian or vegan? New Moon Herbs Farm has dried black beans, and No Evil Foods has a range of seitan-based vegan meat options. (Both at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market)

Find onions and dried cayenne peppers from New Moon Herbs Farm, garlic from Lotus Farm and Garden Supply, and potatoes from Meadow Cove Farm. (All at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market) You can’t have chili without tomatoes, and Paper Crane Farm has frozen heirloom tomatoes most weeks at the Asheville City Market. What goes with chili like nothing else? Cornbread. East Fork Farm has cornmeal for sale at the YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market.

Looking for a side dish to go with the chili? Some sauteed greens or a salad would be great! Flying Fish CSA (YMCA Indoor Winter Tailgate Market) has baby kale and collards. New at Asheville City Market this past week was Second Spring Market Garden with red leaf lettuce. And Jake’s Farm (Asheville City Market) has scarlet frills mustard- sweeter than most mustard greens, but still delivering a faint mustard flavor.

Last but certainly not least- chili needs cheese on top. Victor at Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery has cow’s milk cheddar that would be wonderful, or try goat’s milk chevre from Spinning Spider Creamery or Three Graces Dairy.
